Holding Down Systems for Steel Stanchions
The performance requirements of bolts for securing steel columns to concrete supports, under service conditions and during construction were considered. Details are given for the traditional holding down system, in which the bolt heads bear against a load spreading device embedded in concrete. Variations of this system employ high yield steel or prestressed high tensile steel, bolts secured in drilled holes using bonding agents, and a recessed base system. Design considerations are discussed for each part of the structures and methods of overcoming common problems are included. Difficulties arising for the contractors on the site are discussed, particularly for traditional systems. Brief recommendations are made for steelwork designers and on-site contractors for each stage of the process.
