Ferrocement in Bending, Part I: Static Nonlinear Analysis
An analytical and experimental investigation of ferrocement beams subjected to flexure with monotonically increasing load are presented. Experiments were carried out to determine the stress-strain curves of the constituent materials: mortar and different steel meshes; and to find the load-deflection curves, crack distribution and crack width for ferrocement beams reinforced with varying volumes of welded and woven steel meshes. An analytical model was formulated to analyze and predict the nonlinear load-deflection behavior of ferrocement beams from the measured stress-strain curves of the constituent materials. The experimental results of this investigation and some published data on reinforced concrete were used to verify the validity of the model. The model satisfactorily predicts the load-deflection curves of ferrocement and reinforced concrete beams. Based on the model a simple relationship is proposed to predict the crack width versus steel stress for ferrocement beams.
