The objectives of the proposed study were to explore the existing methods and procedures related to bituminous paving operations, to identify the potential paving operation techniques which could be used in the State of Utah, and to recommend the study results for implementation into operating practice in the Utah DOT as appropriate. These objectives were achieved through a detailed literature review. Existing and potential bituminous paving techniques were identified, and their application and limits of use were determined. Various construction procedures and practices were documented in the report, so that other agencies also may make maximum use of the results. These construction procedures and practices include preparation, mixing, placement, and compaction of bituminous materials; environmental factors; thick and thin lift paving; construction joint guidelines; effect of drum mix system asphalt plants; and additives on paving operations.
