Factors Affecting the Durability of Concrete Bridge Decks: Construction Practices
With the objective of determining factors which contribute to deck cracking, the concrete finishing, forming, reinforcement, and curing were observed on four bridge decks. Each deck was divided longitudinally, placing control areas adjacent to test areas in the same placement. Two crack surveys were conducted over a time span of three years after deck placement. Planned variables included timing of finishing and brooming, variations of lost deck forms, tightness of reinforcement, amount of longitudinal reinforcement, and types of cure. Unplanned variables such as concrete materials, slump, weather, placement conditions, etc. were minimized due to the adjacent location of the test and control areas. The effects of the planned variables are discussed. Variations in lost deck forms and reinforcement had little or no effect on cracking. Late finishing and late brooming, and wet rug cure resulted in the least amount of cracking. Timing and proper application of the cure were instrumental in minimizing cracking. The later cure resulting in the greater amount of small cracking.
