Reduction of Friction and Wear in the M551 Sheridan Recoil Mechanism
The M551 Sheridan Recoil Mechanism has suffered a 'hanging out of battery' problem as a direct result of extreme wear between the rear follower bearing and sleeve. The study was undertaken to solve this problem. Friction and wear tests were conducted for the purpose of improving the lubricity and antiwear properties of hydraulic fluid MIL-H-6083C and selecting the optimum follower bearing, sleeve material, and hydraulic fluid combination.
