Use of Sealants in Masonry Joints
In preserving historic structures, the sealing of exterior joints in masonry can be a major problem. In some cases, polymeric sealants have been used to seal masonry joints of historic structures. The efficiency of organic sealants as a barrier to the penetration of air, dust, and water in joints between wood, steel, and glass materials has been studied, however, little has been reported about the use and performance of sealants in masonry joints. A survey of literature on the use of sealants in masonry joints was performed, however, little information was obtained. The characteristics and properties of the three major components--the masonry, the sealant, and the joint have been compiled based on the literature survey. A general guide to aid the selection process is also presented.
