Archaeological Excavations at Esplanade Avenue and North Rampart Street New Orleans, Louisiana
Archaeological excavations were conducted at the corner of Esplanade Avenue and North Rampart Street, New Orleans, Louisiana. Fieldwork was conducted during August and September, 1980. Historical documentation was collected on the project area, and more specifically on two house lots selected for intensive investigation. On these two lots were located houses constructed between 1826 and 1840, and removed during the early twentieth century. The excavation of the upper-middle class site (Lot A) revealed numerous in situ brick foundations associated with the original house and outbuilding. Also found were two features rich in artifacts dating to the middle nineteenth century. The excavation of the lower-middle class site (Lot B) revealed disturbance of the site subsequent to a ca. 1845 fire. Excavated features included a well, filled in the early twentieth century, and two early twentieth century trash deposits. Artifacts were analyzed using a formal-functional classification scheme in an attempt to identify an urban artifact pattern.
