Brick Shear Walls: An Experimental Investigation of the Brickwork to Concrete Interface
An investigation into the frictional strength of a cracked joint at the interface between a brick shear wall and a concrete slab is undertaken in which the effects of a range of confining stresses - 0.04MPa to 1.4MPa, slab finish - steel trowelled, wood float, scabbled, mortar type - 1:1:6 and 1:2:9, and concrete surface dryness - dry and wet, were considered. It is shown that the coefficient of friction decreases as the confining stress increases; and that, whereas at low confining stress the coefficient is dependent upon surface roughness, at high confining stress it is dependent upon mortar strength. Characteristic frictional capacities for each of the concrete surfaces are derived.
