Analysis of the Failure Mechanism of Shipboard Structural Members Exposed to Fire
The objective of this study is to analyze the behavior of a typical ship structural member exposed to fire. Included in this work are chapters pertaining to the modelling of the fire process and the structural member to be analyzed. After determining the expected temperature exposure of a shipboard structural member, a heat transfer analysis is carried out and the resulting load is subsequently used in the failure analysis. The major thrust of this study is the analysis of the failure mechanism of the collapse of an I beam. Two methods of analysis developed by Kecman, and Hayduk and Wierzbicki, are summarized and applied to the case of a fire load. The reduced moments due to fire exposure are determined and finally recommendations are offered for the use of this information in ship structural design.
