Improving the Safety of Our Nation's Dams--Progress and Issues
According to a 1975 Corps of Engineers inventory there are about 50,000 public and private dams in the United States which are 25 feet or more in height or have a maximum impounding capacity of 50 acre-feet or more. These dams are used for many purposes including flood control, recreation, irrigation, and municipal and industrial water storage. The number of dams is reportedly increasing by about 1,600 per year. About 89 percent of the dams are non-Federal and about 40 percent present a significant or high hazard potential to downstream life and property if they should fail. This is our third report in less than 2 years on dam safety. The previous two reports generally discussed the need for greater Federal action to increase the safety of both Federal and non-Federal dams throughout the United States. This report discusses what progress has been made and the matters which we believe require additional attention.
