Partially Braced Inelastic Beam Buckling Experiments
An experimental study of the inelastic buckling behavior of partially braced I-beams is described. Eleven rolled 250UB37 steel beams, of lengths 7, 9 and 11.2 metres, each having different types of intermediate partial bracing were tested. A specially designed bracing box provided either rotational bracing or lateral bracing to the beam cross-section at mid-span. Measurements of initial geometrical imperfections and residual stresses of the test beams were made. Experimental results obtained are in good agreement with the theoretical predictions from a geometrical and material non-linear finite element analysis. The results confirmed that a lateral brace placed at the tension flange is virtually ineffective, while a rotational brace or a lateral brace placed at the shear centre is fully effective. It was found that design loads predicted by the BS5950 and the AISC specifications provided good lower bound estimates to the failure loads of the test beams.
