Analysis of Integral Abutment Bridges
The study is to investigate the stresses induced by thermal movements in the girder and upper portion of steel bearing piles of integral abutment-type bridges. A full-scale model representing the end portion of a typical highway bridge was constructed and tested in four construction stages. For each stage, the test specimen was subjected to a series of predetermined longitudinal movements via hydraulic jacks to simulate expansion and contraction due to temperature changes. SR-4 electrical strain gauges, both single and rectangular rosettes, were employed to experimentally determine the stress which developed in the girders and top portion of the steel piling due to the simulated temperature movements. The test results are presented in figures and their accuracy and significance is discussed in detail. (Modified author abstract)
