Synthesis of Highway Practice: 21. Highway Location Reference Methods
The report presents the results of a comprehensive review and evaluation of existing information on the current practices of highway agencies in the use of highway location reference methods to facilitate locating positions on the highway for such functions as planning, safety, and maintenance. Some emphasis is placed on methods used to establish locations at which accidents have taken place. No all-purpose location reference method, or broader system of field and office procedures of which any method is a part, was identified. The various methods found to be in use are described in sufficient detail for potential users to select, or devise adaptations of, those which best suit their individual needs. Areas where research could be profitable are identified.
