Vertical Uplift Tests on Model Straight and Belled Auger Footings
Instrumented reinforced concrete model footing tests were performed in a compacted silty clay to determine: (1) the effect of a belled or straight base on the total load resistance, (2) the load distribution to the footing base and shaft, (3) the variation of the total load resistance with footing depth, and (4) the appearance of the soil failure pattern after maximum load. Since a transmission tower may fail before the maximum load resistance of a footing is reached, emphasis was placed on the footing loads reached at a failure movement of 0.073 in. The belled auger footings had considerably more movements before reaching maximum load than straight auger footings of the same depth. All the total footing load-movement curves could be fit quite well to a hyperbolic equation. (Author)
