To provide a better understanding of the micro-mechanics of erosion and other impact-related processes, NBS researchers investigated the detailed nature of damage produced by solid particles impinging on ceramics and metals. Their results, obtained by scanning and transmission electron microscopy, clearly specify the elastic-plastic nature of impacts.
