A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
In 1956, when CATS undertook the project of learning 'why' and 'where' people travel, shopping plazas in the Chicagoland Area were just beginning to make their appearance on the scene. At that time, it was found that most shopping trips were focused primarily to central or neighborhood shopping districts. Since 1956, however, many shopping plazas have been developed throughout the Chicagoland Area, and more are in the planning stage. As these plazas becam a reality, it became evident that shopping trips were taking on new characteristics. No longer could it be stated with accuracy the average trip length, trip rates, or other factors involved in shopping trips. To stay abreast of the changing conditions which influence travel, it became imperative that the shopping trip be re-examined.
