The report is a detailed historical narrative of the Guilford Courthouse building and nearby features. The information it includes will permit factual interpretation of sites of primary interest. This data also represents significant background information, which will prove valuable to any intensive archeological search for the precise site and physical remains of the courthouse building, its related structures, such as the jail, stocks, pillary, and well, and neighboring features such as houses and other buildings. Though Guilford Courthouse is not believed to have been imposing architecturally, it dominated the few houses and cleared fields that surrounded it on March 15, 1781. It gave its name to the battlefield and to the battle that occurred just to the west of it that day, and also to the little community that grew about it until four years after the battle, when a change of name to Martinville occurred.
