Design for Openings in the Webs of Composite Beams
The publication deals with the design of simply-supported composite beams with rectangular openings in the webs. The beams comprise steel I-sections and concrete slabs with steel decking as permanent formwork. Design is based on plastic analysis of the cross-section, considering the moment transfer by Vierendeel action across the opening. A relatively straightforward method of analysis is presented and this is summarized in a step-by-step approach. Comparison with available test data shows that the method is conservative but reasonably accurate. The method can also be used for non-composite and notched beams. A worked example is given.
