Durability of Recycled Asphalt Concrete Surface Mixes. Final Report and Executive Summary
The decreasing supply of locally available quality aggregate in some areas, growing concern over waste disposal, and the rising cost of aphalt cement, resulted in the use of recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) in the road construction. This project focused on the durability evaluation of asphalt concrete surface course mixes that contained 0, 10, 20 and 30% RAP. The research methods included the following: Accelerated (by the use of RTFOT and PAV procedures) aging of virgin asphalt cement mixed with four different percentages of asphalt cement recovered from RAP. Determination of the viscosity and infrared spectrscopy date for asphalt cement mixes prior and after aging. Preparation and oven aging of eight asphalt concrete mixes consisting of four levels of RAP addition for two aggregate types: gravel and limestone. Determination of the viscosity and infrared spectroscopy of asphalt cement recovered from asphalt concrete mixes subjected to oven aging procedures. Laboratory evaluation of aged asphalt concrete mixes performance.
