Hays, Kansas, Flood Protection Project
The project is to construct a flood protection project consisting of channel realinement and improvement of levee system around Hays, Kansas. Environmental impacts are increased flood protection; channelization of and consequent damage to 1.5 miles of existing stream and riparian habitat and conversion of 12.8 acres of cultivated land to a levee and appurtenant facilities; redevelopment of Frontier Historical Park; disruption of wildlife corridors; modification of an oxbow lake on Fort Hays Kansas State College campus; temporary adverse impacts from construction activities; modification of pumping stations; increase in water level above low flow crossing; and disruption of archeological and historical sites.
