Drained asphalt concrete, HABD, is a relatively new type of wearing course on Swedish roads. Although experiments were made with a similar type of pavement as early as in the 1940's, there were considerable problems making the pavement sufficiently resistant to stresses from vehicle traffic and it was therefore used only for pedestrian and cycle paths. During the first half of the 70s, however, it was reported that encouraging results had been achieved with HABD abroad, mainly in the U.S.A. and England. The primary reason for the 'reintroduction' of drained asphalt concrete in Sweden was that it was considered possible to reduce the risk of aquaplaning, especially on relatively heavily trafficked roads with high speed limits.
