Concrete Pipe Installations under Various Heights of Fill
During 1958 and 1959 the Division of Materials and Tests and the Bridge Section of the Nebraska Department of Roads made inspections of a number of concrete box and concrete pipe culverts under roadway embankments on Interstate Highway Projects. In the course of these inspections, some questions arose regarding the designs and installation of these structures. As a result of the observations of settlement and performance made in 1958 and 1959 two changes were made in the Standard design of culverts and culvert installations in Nebraska: Culvert grades were designed with camber in the flowlines, the amount calculated on the basis of the height of fill and the predicted settlement of the soil; Control joints were to be constructed in box culverts located where significant settlements are expected.
