Independent Physical-Chemical Treatment of Raw Sewage
A 3.17 l/sec (50 gpm) pilot plant evaluation of the independent physical-chemical treatment (IPC) process was conducted for 27-months at Pomona, California. The pilot plant consisted of chemical clarification w/alum at 25 mg/l as Al and an anionic polymer at 0.3 mg/l followed by a single-stage, pressurized downflow carbon column operated at a hydraulic loading of 2.71 l/sec/sq m (4 gpm/sq ft) and an empty-bed contact time of 30 min. Performance data obtained have demonstrated the stability of the IPC system in producing effluent of excellent overall quality. The suspended solids, total COD and total phosphate removals in the IPC system were 96.6%, 94%, and 92%, respectively. In the course of the study, several methods of controlling sulfide generation in the carbon column were evaluated. Continuous sodium nitrate addition to the carbon column at an average dosage of 5.4 mg/l N was found most effective in preventing sulfide generation.
