Seasonal Variation of Friction Numbers
A research study was initiated to investigate seasonal variations of friction numbers. The primary objective was to determine the parameters which could be used to predict the influence of seasonal variations. The basic tool employed for monitoring potential tire-pavement surface friction was the locked wheel test trailer meeting the requirements of ASTM E274. Twenty test sites were selected to represent a cross section of pavement surfaces incorporated into Maryland's highway system. In addition to friction numbers, data relating to weather conditions and pavement temperature were also recorded. The results of the study indicate that skid resistance does seem to vary during the year at a magnitude larger than could be attributed to the repeatability of this method. However, a more detailed study should be undertaken to isolate the parameters which cause this variation.
