Analysis of Neighborhood Condition and Change in Metropolitan Areas
This paper investigates the extent to which neighborhoods in 21 central cities throughout the country (large standard metropolitan statistical areas) have experienced a revival during the 1970's, based upon neighborhood data pertaining to family income, race, and home ownership. The central cities studied were found to have a significant and larger increase in the number and proportion of tracts with low - income families, minorities, and renters than did the suburbs. Yet, in most central cities, some tracts did register increases in the median family income, the percentage of the population that is white, and owner occupancy. There was an increase in the number of minority neighborhoods and low - income neighborhoods in the suburbs during the 1970's; however, this increase was negligible in comparison to the changes in the central cities. Thus, the general pattern is that central city neighborhoods are becoming worse off compared to the suburban neighborhoods. Seven references and tabular data are provided.
