Hydraulic Model Study of Folsom Dam Spillway Performance and Stilling Basin Abrasion
The Bureau of Reclamation's Water Resources Research Laboratory conducted a 1:50-scale model study of the Folsom Dam service spillway and stilling basin. The purpose of the study was to evaluate flow conditions contributing to abrasion damage in the stilling basin and recommend operational and structural methods to minimize future damage. The scope of the study also included development of a new spillway discharge rating and establishment of new spillway and outlet works operational criteria. Model testing determined that nonuniform operation of the spillway crest gates caused recirculating currents in the stilling basin and exit channel. These currents transported loose rocks from the exit channel into the basin. The availability of loose rock in the exit channel, as well as the channel shape, contributed to this phenomenon. The study recommended that the spillway gates be operated uniformly and that the exit channel be reshaped and cleaned of loose rock.
