Proposed Improvements for Illinois Highways FY 1998
The Fiscal Year 1998 Highway Improvement Program provides for nearly $1,085,000.000 in new construction and related highway improvement work. In addition, $1.2 billion of work is currently under way from previous annual highway programs. The proposed FY 1998 Highway Program emphasizes preservation of the existing system with limited new construction. It also provides a one-year extension of the local benefits program at reduced levels. A total of 636 miles of highways and 290 bridges will be constructed or improved through the FY 1998 programs. The program emphasizes maintaining control of increases in the backlog of deteriorated roads and deficient bridges. The program includes the rehabilitation of 628 miles of existing highways and the construction of 8 miles of new principal arterial highways that have been determined essential to the overall operation of the state's highway system. The improvement or replacement of 290 bridges involves only existing bridges. Funding is also scheduled for the completion of safety and traffic improvements at 328 locations.
