The objective of this research project is to evaluate the performance of geocell in stabilizing weak subgrade soils. Te geocell was installed in St. Davids, Radnor Township, Delaware County by a contractor, Primo Construction Inc. The geocell installation will be evaluated for 3 years. The conclusions drawn in this final evaluation will be used to determine if geocell can be used as a viable alternative to other approved methods and construction practices. The current approved methods used for subgrade stabilization include under cutting unsuitable material and replacing this material with subbase or select borrow material. Class 4 geotextile can also be used as a separator between the subgrade and subbase to prevent intrusion of the subgrade soil into the subbase. This method will generally stabilize the subgrade. Concrete can also be used as a last resort to bridge over a weak soil. While these materials have generally functioned satisfactorily for this application. Each varies in price and ease of construction and degree of satisfactory performance.
