Investigation of Premature Distresses in Flexible Pavements
The study was undertaken to investigate the growing concern regarding premature distresses in flexible pavements in North Carolina and to identify the causes and mechanisms associated with these untimely failures. This objective was approached through extensive field and laboratory testing of the selected pavement sections. Based on the input of the mechanical properties of the layer materials, the actual traffic volume, and the local environmental conditions, the performance of the pavement sections was predicted using the VESYS IIIA structural subsystem. The predicted performance parameters (rutting, cracking, and present serviceability index) were compared with the actual measured performance parameters. In general, the predicted values were found to be close to the actual measured values.
