Hydraulic Performance of Pennsylvania Highway Drainage Inlets Installed in Paved Channels
The capacities of three different standard inlets gratings installed in paved channels by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation were determined in a paved drainage channel equipped with adjustable slopes. The longitudinal slope ranged from 0.5% to 8%; one side slope ranged from 48:1 to 12:1; and the other slope was at an inclination of either 3:1 or 1/8:1. The drainage inlets studied were (1) Type J Inlet, (2) Type 4-Ft. Special Inelt, and (3) Type 6-Ft. Special Inlet. Model inlets were built to half the scale of the actual inlets. Each inlet was tested under a variety of channel configurations and with a certain range of channel flow rates. The capacity of an inlet was determined by actual measurements, and thus the efficiency of each inlet was obtained. (Modified author abstract)
