Kentucky Lock and Dam, Tennessee River, Kentucky
A 1:100 physical navigation model was built to replicate the Kentucky Lock and Dam at approximately river mile 22.4 of the Tennessee River. The model reproduced approximately 0.1 miles immediately upstream of the dam and approximately 1.9 miles downstream of the dam. The model study was performed primarily to determine navigation conditions that would he associated with the construction of a 1,200 ft lock and 1,200 ft guide wall landward of the existing 600 ft lock and to improve any noted navigation deficiencies. The model was also used to develop structures to decrease the size and strength of a large eddy that forms below the spillway during certain flow conditions and operation of the dam. The model was also used to evaluate any impacts on navigation that would result due to construction of proposed fishing jetties and piers. This report describes all plans evaluated in the model and the results of these plans.
