Torsional Strength and Stiffness of Plain Rectangular Concrete Beams
The intent of this research was to investigate the effects of concrete strength, beam width and aspect ratio on the cracking torque and torsional stiffness of plain rectangular concrete members subjected to pure torsion. A review of the torsion problem is given to show need for this research and detailed consideration is given to torsional theories pertaining to cracking torque and stiffness. In an effort to investigate the effects of the geometric parameters, a total of 59 specimens were made up and tested. Using the experimental results and supplementing additional test data reported in the literature, a comparison was made of the existing cracking torque prediction equations and an expression for initial torsional stiffness was developed. In most cases comparison was accomplished using statistical regression studies. (Author)
