Integration of Seismic Design Principles into Preliminary Architectural Design: Appendices
Earthquake causes and effects are reviewed and four basic causes of earthquakes that induce damage are discussed: (1) ground rupture in fault zone; (2) ground failure; (3) tsunamis; and (4) ground shaking. The response of buildings to ground motion, the effects of building shape on response to seismic forces, and the effects of seismic forces on building systems and components are considered. Design and configuration problems are addressed and solutions to these problems are proposed. Commentary on codes which deal with seismic design, a survey questionnaire, and design and evaluation guidelines are provided.
