Historic American Buildings Survey Walcott Park, Minidoka County, Idaho
The Bureau of Reclamation (Reclamation) is currently involved in the extensive redevelopment of Walcott Park, a recreational area adjacent to the Minidoko Dam and Powerhouse in south-central Idaho. As part of the Section 106 review process mandated by the federal Historic Preservation Act of 1966. Reclamation and the Idaho State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) determined in 1989 that the park was eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. The primary grounds of eligibility was the historical and architectural significance of landscape work performed in the park during the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation corps, a New Deal relief program for unemployed youth. To mitigate the adverse effect of new construction on historic landscape features. Reclamation and SHPO signed a Memorandum of Agreement stipulating that Walcott Park would be recorded according to standards of the Historic American Buildings Survey/Historic American Engineering Record. This study is intended to fulfill that obligation. The authors also are preparing a similar study of the Minidoka Dam and Powerhouse that contains complementary information and photographs.
