The purpose of this study was to measure the deformation of two embankments in areas known for settlement and cracking. Two sites were chosen on Goldstream Road near Fairbanks Alaska for installation of several different types of movement measurement instrumentation. Some of the instrumentation was experimental. Deformation was measured over a three-year period. The results of the study show that both road sections exhibited relative vertical movement in addition to lateral spreading. Total relative movements were on the order of 1/2 inch. It is hypothesized that these movements resulted from a combination of settlement and reduced soil shear strength due to thawing permafrost, frost heaving and thaw weakening. It is suggested that the proper use of geosynthetics (for reinforcement purposes) may significantly improve the road performance. Conclusions are also drawn relative to the accuracy and applicability of the various instruments used.
