Performance of Weathering Steel in Bridges
The available data on performance of weathering steel for bridges are summarized and evaluated. The topics addressed are: current use, domestic and foreign experience, corrosion, metallurgy, fatigue, painting, structural details, and aesthetics. The main findings are that properly designed weathering steel bridges exposed to a suitable environment develop a protective oxide coating that makes painting unnecessary. If subjected to deicing salts or prolonged time-of-wetness, the protective oxide coating doesn't form and weathering steel corrodes at the same rate as carbon steel. The loss in life due to corrosion needs to be considered in fatigue design.
