Predicting Cracking Tendencies in Mass Concrete
An independent study of the current methods and procedures used to control thermal cracking in mass concrete is presented. The study includes analysis of both field and laboratory research data. Recommendations on the current practices followed on FDOT projects are made based on the findings of this study. The project was divided into three phases. Phase I consisted of a background literature review to identify current industry standards and procedures used to control thermal cracking in mass concrete elements. Phase II consisted of a preliminary review of mass concrete plans for the Acosta bridge replacement, Dodge Island bridge, White City bridge, and the Howard Frankland bridge. Mass concrete plans for controlling concrete temperature differentials were required on these FDOT projects. The final phase consisted of data reduction of the information collected during the first two phases.
