Safety Concerns Related to Design Build Projects
Design-build contracts are inherently different from traditional engineering/construction contracts and pose different safety and health challenges. Additional considerations must be made when the design-build project closely interfaces with people involved in right-of-way property acquisition. Under the project titled 'Safety Concerns Related to Design-Build Projects,' the Federal Highway Administration entered into a cooperative agreement with South Carolina State University (SCSU). SCSU tasked Concurrent Technologies Corporation (CTC) to determine the nature and extent of safety-related issues on design-build projects. This project examined specific experiences related to the Pocahontas Parkway Project, located in the Richmond, VA area. The Pocahontas Parkway Project was a public-private partnership, as well as a design-build four-lane, 8.8-mile-long roadway. The objective of this task was to identify the best practices to alleviate safety and health concerns, and environmental nuisances related to design-build contracting programs and processes.
