It is coterminous with the Duluth, MN-WI Metropolitan Statistical Area, which comprises Carlton and St. Louis Counties in Minnesota and Douglas County in Wisconsin. Traditionally a mining and transportation hub, the HMA is developing as a center for health care. The HMA includes the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) and Port of Duluth-Superior. The city of Duluth is the largest in the HMA and the birthplace of folk-rock singer-songwriter Bob Dylan.
