TAGA: Daylighting of Houses in Desert Regions
The study is on the daylighting of houses in desert regions. It contains three main parts. A historical review on the development of light in buildings has been carried out to place the case study, in an international context. Then a study was carried out on the people and history of the town of Ghardaia, to understand the architectural form of that region. The third part is experimental and consists of two field studies carried out in Ghardaia, in the South of Algeria, to investigate the influence of light and temperature on the use of residential houses. The investigation included both traditional and 'modern' houses to compare them, the modern having relatively large windows similar to those of the northern part of Algeria, the traditional ones having small or no windows. The results of the lighting study indicate that the use of more windows in modern houses is a true improvement of lighting rather than a fashion.
