Cost/Benefit Analysis of Fire Detectors
The study attempts to determine the economic effectiveness of fire detectors by analyzing data collected from records of fire incidents where fire detectors were employed. Data sources considered were state and local-level fire services, equipment manufacturers, and commercial users of fire protection systems; however, only the Offices of the State Fire Marshals of Michigan and California could supply data for one and two-family dwellings, apartments, and mobile homes with sufficient detail for proper analysis. No fatalities in fire incidents were reported in detector-protected dwellings, and the frequency of reported fires decreased by ten percent. Recommendations made for future data refinement included the use of follow-up forms, insurance company involvement, and improved practices using 901 format. Included are reviews of recent studies of the cost/benefit of fire detectors, a list of references, and a bibliography.
