Clay Mobility in Ridge Route Landslides, Gorman, California
Several Landslides with substantial displacements along clay-bearing bedding planes occur in road cuts along the Los Angeles - San Francisco super highway Interstate 5, between Castaic and Gorman. Geometrically such slides occur where the strike of wet clay-bearing strata in road cuts lies parallel to the roadway, and the inclination is toward the road way at an angle less than the slope of the cut. They also occur on dip slopes. In a large fill across West Liebre Gulch, a special condition appears. Fill, emplaced when the freeway was constructed, suffered slide action following rains both in 1967 and in 1969. (Author)
