Evaluation of Simplified Methods of Analysis for Yielding Structures
The focus of this report is the Nonlinear Static Procedure (NSP) of the guidelines as it is applied to buildings with supplemental energy dissipation systems. The NSP involves 'pushing' a mathematical model of a building to a target displacement, and evaluating each component and element in the building for the forces and deformations corresponding to the target displacement. The building is 'pushed' to the target displacement using a pre-determined pattern of lateral forces applied over the height of the building. In method 1, the target displacement is calculated using a series of coefficients and an estimate of the elastic first mode displacement of the building. In Method 2, the target displacement is determined by an iterative process that utilizes information on the secant stiffness and energy dissipation capacity of components in the building. The study concentrates on single-degree-of-freedom inelastic systems without and with energy dissipation devices.
