Probability Theory and Reliability Analysis in Geotechnical Engineering
It was the primary aim of a special program that took place at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on August 15-19, 1977 to explore the role that probability theory and reliability analysis can play in geotechnical engineering. The overall program was divided into two parts: (A) A three-day tutorial in the use of probability theory and reliability analysis in geotechnical engineering and (B) A two-day workshop on the state-of-the-art of probabilistic methods in geotechnical engineering. Topics considered include the following: Material parameters; Settlement; Stability; Quality control; Soil dynamics; Decision analysis. The main conclusion that can be drawn from the various deliberations is the following: Powerful techniques are now available in the areas of probability theory and reliability analysis which, if properly used, could improve current approaches in geotechnical engineering.
