Numerical and Physical Modelling of Reinforcement Systems for Tunnels in Jointed Rock
The research described represents a continued effort to evaluate reinforcement systems for tunnels built in jointed rock. Both rock bolts and cables were considered to reinforce tunnels in massively bedded rock. The tools of analysis were numerical models using the finite element method, and physical models conducted in a large biaxial frame under conditions approximating plane strain. The major steps in this research were: the conduct of preliminary tests on small physical models of openings in laminated rock reinforced with cables and bolts, the conduct of large scale physical models of tunnels in bedded rock subjected to biaxial loading, the development and refinement of finite element software to extend the capabilities of codes developed at Berkeley for the analysis of structures in jointed rock, and the duplication of the physical model tunnel tests, using the refined finite element program.
