Evaluation of Pavement Texture
A system for pavement macrotexture measurement was evaluated. The system utilizes the principle of depolarization of reflected polarized light. In the report, the output of the system, the depolarized light number (DPN), is compared with other measures of pavement texture: sand-patch mean texture depth (MTD), British pendulum number (BPN), and outflow meter time (OFT) for 22 asphalt concrete sites and 5 portland cement concrete sites. The prediction of texture data from simultaneous measurements of ribbed and blank-tire skid resistance data was investigated. Using the two-tire data, it is possible to predict sand-patch mean texture depth (MTD) and British pendulum number (BPN). Comparison of the two-tire data at accident sites demonstrates the potential to screen for wet weather accident sites by means of pavement surveys with the two tires.
