Advanced High Performance Gel Permeation Chromatography Methodology
The report explores the use of high-performance gel permeation chromatography (HP-GPC) as a means of studying asphalt composition and their intermolecular interaction. Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP) core asphalts, their acid-base fractions, and laboratory-oxidized counterparts were analyzed. Based on the concept that distribution of molecular size and the ability of the molecules to assemble into larger entities in solution and into networks in neat asphalt are crucial to the performance of the asphalt. Attributes of the network formed will determine the ability of the asphalt to resist thermal shock, for example, by providing strength and elasticity.
