The Influence of Compressible Underlying Layers on Pile Group Settlement
Various methods of calculating the settlement of pile groups in the presence of softer underlying strata, are discussed. Solutions are presented for an example case to illustrate the effect of underlying stratum compressibility on single pile settlement, settlement interaction between two piles, and the group settlement ratio. From a comparison of the various methods of settlement calculation, it is concluded that the method proposed by Poulos and Mattes (1971) gives reasonably accurate solutions.
