Existing permanent deformation design technology was examined and it was shown that it is incapable of predicting permanent deformation. Two recently proposed techniques, aimed at overcoming this deficiency, are considered but found to be inadequate. A procedure referred to as the simulative statistically-based approach is advanced and described. Experimental equipment, testing procedures, and a statistically-based experimental program were developed to characterize a field asphalt concrete mixture. The results of the laboratory experimental program were employed to predict the permanent deformation of a number of Brampton Test Road full-depth asphalt sections. Excellent agreement between predicted and measured permanent deformations was found. The nature and distribution of permanent deformation throughout the asphalt concrete layer as shown to be largely a function of the radial stress distribution. (Author)
