Analysis of a Point Sink Embedded in a Porous Elastic Half Space
When pore water is withdrawn from saturated ground, by pumping, there is a reduction of pore pressure in the neighborhood or the region of withdrawal. This leads to an increase in effective stress and consequently a decrease in volume of the ground surrounding the region of withdrawal, and hence will lead to some surface subsidence. In this paper a simple closed form solution is found for the long term settlement caused by withdrawal of fluid, at a constant rate, from a point sink at finite depth below the surface of a homogeneous, isotropic, porous, elastic half space.
